Establishing a good wine business is cash-degenerative over a number of years whilst the vines grow and bottles are stored before sale. From starting the business to seeing any return on your investment can also take years. The establishment cost is initially high, and if you are growing fast you need access to further cash as the business grows. To do that credibly, you also need to demonstrate good financial disciplines. NEX Exchange forces you to ensure that you get those disciplines ingrained in your company for your investors. It is low-cost and has been a good exchange for us – it’s enabled us to grow. At some stage investors want to sell, and NEX Exchange gives them the opportunity to do that. The levels of trade in our stock that go through are about the same as the average AIM company. So we have decent levels of liquidity.

Originally NMR was part of the Milk Marketing Board (MMB) but following deregulation we have had a Plc status. The original shareholders were farmers who supplied MMB but now over 60 per cent of NMR shares are held by non-farmer investors. NMR needs a relatively low cost but efficient market. The demands for food security increase each year which means NMR is developing new testing protocols and innovative services for dairy farmers and we need the access to new capital that NEX Exchange can provide.

Our decision to list on the NEX Exchange makes both strategic and commercial sense as the market has great access to funding and regulation that fits Sativa’s needs. NEX helps start-ups due to the flexibility it offers, along with low costs. Also, the fact that NEX’s Growth Market is an emerging market, matches Sativa Investments’ start-up nature and culture.

Joining NEX Exchange gives stakeholders a market on which their shares can be traded more easily. It also provides advantages such as relief from inheritance tax by virtue of being quoted on a regulated exchange.
